Use this option when your client supports Streamable HTTP MCP but has no dedicated Chorus
integration. The connection exposes Chorus tools only; it does not install a Chorus
workflow or make the client remotely available.

:::tip[Calling tools from a shell]
If you only need to call Chorus tools from a script or terminal rather than from an MCP
client, use the built-in `chorus mcp call <tool>` command — see
[The chorus CLI](/reference/cli/).
:::

Before you configure the client, create an agent key with only the permissions that client needs by
following [Prepare agent access](/guides/administrator-setup/).

## Configure the MCP server

Add a Streamable HTTP MCP server named `chorus` using:

```text
URL: https://chorus.example.com/api/mcp
Authorization: Bearer cho_REDACTED
```

Use the client's protected credential store when available. Configuration syntax differs
between clients, so follow the client's documentation for adding the URL and custom
Authorization header.

## Verify the connection

List the available MCP tools and call `chorus_checkin`. Confirm that the response shows
the expected agent identity and permissions.

## Capabilities and limits

- The client can call Chorus MCP tools allowed by its agent key.
- No Chorus skills, hooks, reviewers, or workflow sequencing are installed.
- A generic MCP client is not a Chorus daemon backend.
- Chorus cannot remotely start, control, interrupt, or resume the client.
- Conversation and tool-run recovery remain the client's responsibility.

## Common issues

- **`401 Unauthorized`:** rotate the agent key and update the client credential.
- **`404 Not Found`:** use the exact `/api/mcp` endpoint.
- **Tools work but a workflow stalls:** the client must invoke each workflow step and
  review gate itself.
- **The client cannot set HTTP headers:** it cannot authenticate to this MCP endpoint.

For general key and connectivity checks, see [Troubleshoot agent connections](/guides/troubleshooting/).
